It was established, as Portland Water Company (PWC), in 1862 by a group of Portland citizens as a private company as a means to ensure continued growth. The wells which had been used up to that point were proving inadequate.
In operation since 1979, [2] [3] [4] and run by Portland Water District, [5] the plant sits at the opposite (southern) end of Tukey's Bridge from the former B&M Baked Beans factory. In addition to producing clean water, [6] which flows into nearby Casco Bay, the facility also created hundreds of tons of treated biosolids.
Its earliest predecessor company, the Portland Gas Light Company, was founded in Maine in 1849. The current company was set up in 1984 and is based in New Hampshire .
