The Vindhya Range (also known as Vindhyachal) (pronounced [ʋɪnd̪ʱjə]) is a complex, discontinuous chain of mountain ridges, hill ranges, highlands and plateau escarpments in west-central India. Technically, the Vindhyas do not form a single mountain range in the geological sense.
Based on the Köppen climate classification, Panther Peak is located in a hot arid climate zone with hot summers and mild winters. [5] Any scant precipitation runoff from the mountain's slopes drains northeast to Tornillo Creek which is a tributary of the Rio Grande. The lower slopes of the peak are covered by juniper, oak, and piñon.

The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1966 by the United States Board on Geographic Names to remember Jessie Coleman "J.C." Hunter (1890–1945), an early proponent of the park and major landowner of what became the park.
