The Jefferson County Courthouse is the center of county government for Jefferson County, Arkansas. It is located in the Pine Bluff Commercial Historic District in Pine Bluff on the border between the Arkansas delta and Piney Woods.
In 1829 Thomas Phillips claimed a half section of land where Pine Bluff is located. Jefferson County was established by the Territorial Legislature on November 2, 1829, and began functioning as a county April 19, 1830. [citation needed] At the August 13, 1832, county election, the pine bluff settlement was chosen as the county seat.
Jefferson, also known as Jefferson Springs, [2] is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Arkansas, United States. It is located on Arkansas Highway 365, 4.8 miles (7.7 km) south-southeast of Redfield and is the home of the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR). [3]
Vaugine Township, officially the Township of Vaugine, is a township in Jefferson County, in the U.S. state of Arkansas. [1] It is named for Major Francis Vaugine, a 19th-century landowner. Its population was 41,374 as of the 2020 census. The only municipality is Pine Bluff, the county seat. [2]
It was named in honor of Pine Bluff native George Howard Jr. in 2008, and continues to house Pine Bluff's main post office as well as federal courts. [ 2 ] The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
Pine Bluff residents and others made summer homes in the area. In 1855 the burgeoning community applied for a post office for the town under the name of Sulphur Springs, but since there already was a town by that name in the northwestern part of the state, they chose the name White Sulphur Springs instead.
