Erskineville (previously known as Macdonaldtown) is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located 6 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney .
The whole suburb of Macdonald was incorporated as a local government area in 1872 and was renamed as Erskineville in 1893. [1] The area was renamed after the local Reverend George's "Erskine's villa" because they wanted the blue-collar town to have a nice, "virtuous" name and it would drive property prices up in the tough, working class area.

The Municipality of Erskineville was a local government area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.The municipality was proclaimed as the "Municipal District of Macdonald Town" on 23 May 1872 and, with an area of 0.8 square kilometres, was one of the smallest local government areas in Sydney and included the modern suburb of Erskineville, part of Eveleigh and the locality of Macdonaldtown.
