I was thinking of renting a cargo van and attaching my wife's car to it with a travel dolly. Is it possible to rent from Enterprise or any other Cargo van rental company and tow a car with it. We are moving to Portland and want to tow the car on a trailer. U-haul would want a truck to tow it and be 1500 before gas and all that other jazz.

Thing is if you scuff up/damage a rental "car" moving things you'll be in deep trouble. You would need to take a "truck route" down from Albany. Others can probably fill this in but IIRC you can take Route 9 or I-95 down to the George Washington Bridge (upper level only) to Harlem River Drive.
1. Buy a good used truck and trailer. 2. Load up and move. 3. When you get where you need to be, unload the truck and trailer, and sell them. 4. No problem. I, too, do not believe for a minute that their trucks have "special" hitches and wiring connectors. Yes, their trucks and equipment, their rules, but "specially engineered" towing set-ups?
In browsing the major moving rental companies, only U-Haul seems to offer trailer rentals and they want $1200ish. The cost difference is quite attractive and would more than cover the cost of having a trailer hitch installed on my SUV. However, I am wondering whether there are any other options for cargo trailer rental besides U-Haul?
I'm looking to move my girlfriend and her small car back east from CO. to PA. I would like to know if there is any business with enclosed car trailers that I could rent -one way- to move her car and some boxes in. We'd like to avoid driving both vehicles with me towing a seperate u-haul type trailer for the boxes if possible.
So what wuould you reccomend renting.... a cargo van? 10' truck, or maybe the 14'truck? Price wise the cargo van will be the cheapest per mile, but same rental fee. The 10' and 14' are the same fee to rent, but same per mile. Our total move distance round trip is less than 20 miles. As always, thanks in advance!
That's the payload weight for the truck or weight you can put on the rear tires. The trailer tow weight for the standard truck is 2240lbs and that includes the weight of the trailer. If the truck has the trailer tow package on it, the rating is 5660lbs. I doubt you can hit the standard tow weight with a 5x 8 trailer.
As Reed stated, one of the national rental rental companies currently offer one-way personal move cargo van or pickup truck rentals. The smallest most offer for one-way rentals are the standard 10' or larger cube vans.
