I work in immunizations at the state health department where I live. I’m getting burnt out. The bureaucracy and red tape, having to change the way we do things because the governor is looking over our shoulders, working 10-20 (and 30-40 for supervisors) extra hours a week without any additional pay, and on a selfish note- no public recognition.

Another option to consider: pursue an MPH. I am not a nurse, but an epidemiologist (MPH degree). I work in an academic environment alongside clinicians. We have a fairly unique group of nurses (RNs, one DNP, PhDs), physicians (internal medicine, hospital-based), and staff like me (various backgrounds in public health, like epidemiology ...
Becoming a public/community health nurse as a new grad definitely seems doable, especially nowadays. Many health departments are hiring nurses for COVID work (contact tracing, testing & vaccines). I bet that would be a great way to get your foot in the door. 4. WitSupremacist.
Ever since COVID, the retention rate at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health - Environmental Health has declined. People chose retirement due to poor leadership, many quit and moved on to other jobs. This was briefly addressed by the LA Times article published back in Sept 2023.
