Keep in mind that "Dunstan" was originally a named variety that was a cross between American and Chinese. However, it was also registered as a trade name and now seed grown trees are sold under the brand name "Dunstan". Unless you purchased grafted trees they are likely seed grown and can pollinate each other. For wildlife purposes, I'd have no ...

So I bought my 3 dunstan's from chestnut hill farms in Florida in 2012. The first year I kept them home in my garden in 7 gallon roottrapper bags and watered the heck out of them. They put on a heck of a root system that first year. In spring of 2013 I planted them out on the farm and gave them the same treatment that I give all my apple trees.

So, Chestnut Hill can sell whatever they want under that trade name, but for it to truly be a Dunstan variety, it needs to be a grafted tree. Chestnuts are fairly true to seed compared to many trees, so what we are actually doing is starting seedlings from nuts that came from Dunstan trees.

Rutgers and Kansas Sate say tolerant or resistant to juglone. Penn State, Minnesota, Iowa State, and Ohio State don't mention chestnut. That is why I asked if anyone had experience with it. As I kept looking around, I did find a few posts on the QDMA forum and some other forums where people say that they have chestnuts near walnuts.

Bare root trees are generally grown in the ground and dug up. The roots are cut during extraction and the soil is washed off the roots for transport. Bare root trees need to be purchased, and planted when dormant. The saying with these trees is: "Year 1 - sleep, Year 2 - creep, and Year 3 - leap." They have significant transplant shock.

There are pros and cons with tubing chestnuts. Tubes saved mine in drought, but when I removed the tube the trees bowed to the ground from weak trunks. My best chestnuts are growing in cages and require watering in a drought, so this year each chestnut got a 6 x 6 Lumite moisture barrier and a cage.

5 year old buck +. Mar 29, 2022. #18. The chestnuts that I have seen in the Twin Cities were on Les Bolstad golf course (The University of Minnesota golf course). They are over 50 feet tall and produce thousands of nutless burrs each year (I believe because they are not getting pollenated).

Chestnut Hill is where the original Dunstan variety was created. However, they also use the name "Dunstan" as a trade name. The original grafted trees were sold for a number of years and there are some orchards around that have these trees. Chestnut Hill now sells seedlings of "Dunstan" under the trade name "Dunstan".

Just be aware planting these in central Wisconsin, we are on the far outer side of the recommended planting zone. Supposedly these are hardy to -25 but most are grown in Florida. When I purchased my Dunstan's from Chestnut Hill Farms (the grower of all Dunstan seedlings) they said I was pretty much rolling the dice. I am in Marquette County.
