The first official instance of the Illinois State Journal and Register was published on May 17, 1942. This was the first iteration of a combined newspaper in Springfield, Illinois. This combined newspaper was issued only on Sundays. This can be seen in the editorial on page four of that paper dated May 17, 1942.
