Atmos knows fronts are ear level and side/rear surrounds are 2-3 feet higher, to disperse the sound better. All speakers, 5.1 up to 7.2.4 (or more now) will be calibrated for delay and SP. A quick google 5.1 rear speaker placement will bring up lots of articles. Most AV manuals explain this too.

rear surround speaker placement for 5.1 system. Hopefully, this is a good place for this, but anyhoo, my living room isn’t very big, it’s 11 feet wide by 15 feet long. Well, it’s actually a little wider than that as the kitchen area is all open into the left side of the living room but since the front door to the house is on the same wall ...

    www.avsforum.com/threads/height-and-placement-of-side-and-rear-surrounds-for-7...

Just wondering how high most people are placing their side and rear surround speakers. The old 5.1 surround sound instructions were to place your surround speakers 2 to 3 feet above ear level and about 12" behind the listeners, along the sides. The new Dolby instructions for 7.1 and 5.1 lately just says "slightly above ear level".

I have the Dolby Atmos 9.1.2 Speaker Placement but I was wondering if there is a similar setup guide for 11.2 speaker layout. I'm not going to put that many speakers in yet but I want to put in the speaker wires in for future proofing before I install the drywall.

Since you won't move the couch forward, 5.1.2 isn't going to be great regardless of where you place the surround speakers. Neither location is correct. The four spots circled would actually be okay for 7.1.2 if you could move the couch even a foot: 5.1.2 Overhead Speakers. 7.1.2 Overhead Speaker Setup.

  11. Rear speaker placement suggestions for 5.1 (no space behind)

    www.avsforum.com/threads/rear-speaker-placement-suggestions-for-5-1-no-space...

Dolby recommends around ear level. 1.2 meter is the average but they do allow 1.25 times the height of the front speakers. So this means 1.2 meter to 1.5 meter high off the floor. Just remember personal preference = compromised audio/accuracy and what's best for surround sound experience/accuracy does not mix together.
