The Accra Technical University (ATU) was established in 1949 as a Technical School in Ghana and commissioned in 1957 as Accra Technical Institute before being converted into a Polytechnic in 2007 by the Parliament of Ghana. [3] [4] [5] It was later given a university status, becoming Accra Technical University (ATU) in 2016.
The college initially offered a three-year teaching diploma in Home Economics. This three year course continued until 1978 when a four year university degree course was introduced, with the first students graduating in 1981 with NUI degrees. In 1997, the Food Technology Centre was established, with nursing degree programmes commencing in 2002. [3]

Following the founding of Central Texas College in Killeen in the late 1960s, local citizens sought to establish an upper division college to meet the demand for a four-year, degree-granting institution. [6] As a result, American Technological University (ATU), a private institution, was founded in September 1973. [6]
