Services started on 1 May 1964 when British European Airways (BEA) Helicopters operated the first service between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly with a Sikorsky S-61.. The original heliport was formally opened five months later on 1 September 1964 by Councillor Alfred Beckerleg, the Mayor of Penzance with the Lady Mayoress, and cost £88,000 [3] (equivalent to £2,300,000 in 2023). On 16 July 1983, a British Airways Helicopters passenger helicopter, on a scheduled flight from Penzance Heliport, crashed into the sea 2 NM (3.7 km; 2.3 mi) short of St Mary's Airport. Nineteen passengers and one crew member were killed; six survivors (four passengers and two crew) were picked up by the St Mary's Lifeboat .

On 16 July 1983 a British Airways Helicopters commercial Sikorsky S-61 helicopter, Oscar November (G-BEON), crashed in the southern Celtic Sea, in the Atlantic Ocean, while en route from Penzance to St Mary's, Isles of Scilly in poor visibility. Only six of the twenty-six people on board survived.
