SAE 304 stainless steel is the most common stainless steel. It is an alloy of iron, carbon, chromium and nickel. It is an austenitic stainless steel, and is therefore not magnetic. It is less electrically and thermally conductive than carbon steel.
The following datasheet and specification show SS 304 stainless steel properties including physical properties and mechanical properties. Chemical Composition Type 304 grade stainless steel composition is given in table below.
Stainless steel chemical composition chart, including SS 304, 316, 316L, 304L, 321, 303, 410, 430, 440, 17-4 PH & duplex 2205, etc.
The following tables give SS 304 stainless steel properties and specifications (datasheet) including chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, heat treatment, corrosion resistance, machinability and machining, welding, etc.
Type 304 is the most versatile and widely used stainless steel. It is still sometimes referred to by its old name 18/8 which is derived from the nominal composition of type 304 being 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
304 Stainless Steel Chemical Composition. The typical chemical composition for 304 stainless steel is given in the table below, together with composition limits given for the product according to different ASTM and EN standards.
Austenitic Cr-Ni stainless steel. Better corrosion resistance than Type 302. High ductility, excellent drawing, forming, and spinning properties. Essentially non-magnetic, becomes slightly magnetic when cold worked.
Comprised of 18% chromium, 8% nickel, and limited amounts of manganese and carbon content, 304 stainless steel is recognized for its exceptional rust and corrosion resistance.
304 stainless steel composition contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, so it is also known as 18-8 steel. The following table lists the chemical composition of SS304 in various standards. Notes: ASTM A240/A240M: Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and for General Applications.
AISI 304 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel formulated for primary forming into wrought products. 304 is the AISI designation for this material. S30400 is the UNS number. Additionally, the British Standard (BS) designation is 304S15. And the AFNOR (French) designation is Z7Cn18-09.
