Shirley Collie Nelson (born Shirley Angelina Simpson; March 16, 1931 – January 27, 2010) was an American country music and rockabilly singer, yodeler, guitarist and songwriter. From 1963 to 1971, she was the second wife of country star Willie Nelson .
During Nelson's second recording session at Radio Recorders, in California, Harlan Howard took Shirley Collie to the studio, where Nelson was cutting "Mr. Record Man". After the Collies attended a Ray Price concert at Harmony Park Ballroom, the couple socialized often with Nelson. [4] While in California, Nelson and Collie began an affair. [5]
Nelson first started playing "Columbus Stockade Blues" as a "jazzy up-tempo number too fast for the dancers" while touring with wife Shirley Collie and steel guitarist Jimmy Day as The Offenders. By 1970, most of Nelson's songwriting royalties were invested in tours that did not produce significant profits. In addition to the problems in his career, Nelson divorced Shirley Collie in 1970. In December, his ranch in Ridgetop, Tennessee, burned down. He interpreted the incident as a signal for a change.
For this album, United Artists gathered six previously unreleased songs, two songs from Here's Willie Nelson, and two songs issued only as singles. Among the unreleased songs was a duet with his then-wife, Shirley Collie: "Columbus Stockade Blues". Unfortunately, she is not credited on the LP. [citation needed]
