This Earth of Mankind is the first book in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's epic quartet called Buru Quartet, first published by Hasta Mitra in 1980.The story is set at the end of the Dutch colonial rule and was written while Pramoedya was imprisoned on the political island prison of Buru in eastern Indonesia.
This Earth of Mankind had its premiere on 9 August 2019 in Surabaya, East Java, along with The Fugitive, another film adapted from Toer's novel of the same name. [3] The film was released theatrically in Indonesia on 15 August 2019. [4] It garnered 1,316,583 spectators during its theatrical run and grossed Rp52.6 million (US$3,355,943). [5]
Written and illustrated by Hatsumi Kodama, Konoyo wa Tatakau Kachi ga Aru began serialization in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits on April 17, 2023. [1] Its chapters have been compiled into three tankōbon volumes as of September 2024.
It is composed of the novels This Earth of Mankind, Child of All Nations, Footsteps, and House of Glass, published between 1980 and 1988. The book series is loosely based on the life of Tirto Adhi Soerjo. The Buru Quartet books were banned by the regime of long-serving Indonesian president Suharto. The ban was lifted in 2010.
Prior to serialization, the pair previously published a one-shot version of the manga in the October issue of Monthly Shōnen Ace on August 25, 2018. The series began serialization in the January issue of the same magazine on November 26, 2018. [2] The series is set to end with the release of its eighteenth volume. [4]
This manga/anime series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where constant conflicts between nobles leaves whole parts of the earth uninhabited, cities in ruins, and technology rare. Only the nobles possess futuristic ships, and the richest have domed cities where the debilitated Earth can still support life.
