Sarangani, officially the Municipality of Sarangani (Cebuano: Lungsod sa Sarangani; Tagalog: Bayan ng Sarangani), is a municipality in the province of Davao Occidental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 22,515 people, making it the least populated municipality in the province. [3]
The island is located about 13 km (8.1 mi) from mainland Mindanao, separated by the Sarangani Strait. Balut, Sarangani and Olanivan islands make up the Sarangani Islands group. Politically, the group is organized under the Municipality of Sarangani of Davao Occidental since 1978, having previously been part of Jose Abad Santos. [2]
Its capital is Alabel while Glan is the most populous municipality in the province. With a 230-kilometer (140 mi) coastline along the Sarangani Bay and Celebes Sea, the province is at the southernmost tip of Mindanao island, and borders South Cotabato and Davao del Sur to the north, Davao Occidental to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the south.
The province of Davao Occidental is governed by a governor and a vice governor. The whole province is a lone congressional legislative district. [13] The municipality of Malita, the largest and most populous in the province, serves as the provincial capital and the place where the provincial officials of Davao Occidental convene.
On May 8, 1967, the municipality became part of Davao del Sur, when Davao was divided under Republic Act No. 4867. [8] On June 11, 1978, the islands of Sarangani and Balut were carved out from the municipality to form the new municipality of Sarangani, through Presidential Decree No. 1550 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos.
