The Portland–South Portland, Maine, metropolitan statistical area is a region consisting of three counties in Maine, anchored by the city of Portland and the smaller city of South Portland. As of the 2020 census , the MSA had a population of 551,740. [ 2 ]
Portland (/ ˈ p ɔːr t l ə n d / PORT-lənd) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine and the county seat of Cumberland County.Portland's population was 68,408 in April 2020. [4]
On July 21, 2023, the OMB delineated one combined statistical area, three metropolitan statistical areas, and one micropolitan statistical area in Maine. [1] As of 2023, the largest of these is the Portland-Lewiston-South Portland, ME CSA , comprising the region around Maine's largest city of Portland .
The city hall built in 1867 replaced the previous city hall, built in 1862 (designed by James H. Rand) [5] and burned in the Great Fire of 1866. [2] Portland's 1825 Market House, in what was then Market Square, was remodeled in 1833 to serve as Portland's first city hall. [6] It was used again between 1866 and 1868, after the fire.
Portland is also home to two NCAA Division 1 universities, the Portland State Vikings and the Portland Pilots. The Portland MSA also hosts a number of amateur sports, including college and high school sports. The high school rugby championships are held annually in the Portland MSA, and draw crowds of 8,000 to 10,000 supporters. [18]
In 1786, the citizens of Falmouth formed a separate town in Falmouth Neck and named it Portland. Portland's economy was greatly stressed by the Embargo Act of 1807 (prohibition of trade with the British), which ended in 1809, and the War of 1812, which ended in 1815. In 1820, Maine became a state and Portland was selected as its capital.
