Onalaska (/ ˌ ɒ n ə ˈ l æ s k ə / ⓘ ON-ə-LASS-kə) [4] is a city in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 18,803 at the 2020 census. It borders the larger La Crosse, Wisconsin, and is a part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Area. [5] Onalaska is built on a slightly elevated ridge above the Black River.

The City of Onalaska borders the town, as does the village of Holmen. The CDP of Brice Prairie is located in the western part of the Town of Onalaska.

The La Crosse–Onalaska Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, Vernon County, Wisconsin, and Houston County, Minnesota, anchored by the cities of La Crosse and Onalaska.
It is 6 miles (10 km) northwest of the center of the city of Onalaska and 11 miles (18 km) north of La Crosse, the county seat. Brice Prairie borders the Mississippi's Lake Onalaska to the southwest and the Black River to the northwest. Halfway Creek empties into Lake Onalaska at the southeastern corner of Brice Prairie.
