The ski area was opened in 1980 as part of the Strathcona Science Provincial Park. In 1983 the area was contracted to a private company and renamed Hidden Ridge Ski Area . In 1988 the ski area management changed again, and was renamed to its current Sunridge Ski Area.
The resort is located at #1 Strathcona Parkway, Mt. Washington, BC, approximately a 15-minute drive from the Inland Island Highway, British Columbia Highway 19. Various bus services connect to Courtenay, and during the winter season, the resort operates a ski bus shuttle service with stops in Courtenay. [citation needed] [tone]

Strathcona Provincial Park is the oldest provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, and the largest on Vancouver Island. Founded in 1911, the park was named for Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal , a wealthy philanthropist and railway pioneer.

Strathcona-Westmin Provincial Park is a Class B provincial park located at the southern extremity of Buttle Lake on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The park was separated out from Strathcona Provincial Park by BC Parks in 1987 so that mining operations could proceed within park boundaries.
