Pulp and paper is a major industry in Indonesia, one of the largest producers of pulp and paper in Asia. The modern industry began in 1922 with the establishment of a paper mill during the Dutch colonial period and expanded rapidly between 1970 and the late 1990s to fulfil domestic demand and later as an export sector.

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is an Indonesian pulp and paper company based in Jakarta, Indonesia.One of the largest pulp and paper companies in the world, it was founded as Tjiwi Kimia by Eka Tjipta Widjaja in 1972.
In 2006, International Paper sold the plant to Verso Holdings, LLC, and 1,000 people worked in the mill at that time. In 2015, Verso laid off 300 workers. A year later, it filed for bankruptcy. In 2017, it laid off an additional 300 people and idled a machine. In April 2020, a wood pulp digester exploded, destroying the mill's pulp machines. [3]
