The school has grown significantly since its foundation and moved three times. Originally housed in an old town guild-hall near St Matthew’s Church, it moved to Park Street in 1811, into new buildings in Lichfield Street in 1850 (a site now used by Queen Mary's High School) and finally to a purpose-built school on the Mayfield site in 1965.
In 1923, as a result of a surplus in finances at The Lytham Schools Foundation, it was decided that a school for girls was to be built. Eight of the 32 acres of the King Edward's site were given over to Queen Mary's, with an additional 7.5 acres purchased for the new school. Queen Mary School (QMS) for girls opened next-door in 1930.
Queen Mary's School for Boys (QMSB) was a maintained (state funded) grammar school in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England for boys aged 11–18. The school existed between 1556 and 1970 and was latterly funded by the Hampshire County Council Education Authority .
