In 1650, the Parlement of Aix-en-Provence commissioned the building of a thoroughfare for carts where there was a crumbled rampart. [ 1 ] By 1696 four fountains had been built : Fontaine des 9 canons , Fontaine "Moussue , Fontaine du Roi René and, to the west, "les Chevaux-Marins", now vanished.

In November 1901, after the death of his mother and the sale of family property in Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne bought an old farmhouse and 7000 square metres of land on the Lauves hill near the city. It was created in January 2016, replacing the previous Communauté urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole and five communautés d'agglomération. [2] Its area is 3149.2 km 2. Its population was 1,889,666 in 2018, of which 868,277 in Marseille proper and 143,097 in Aix-en-Provence. [3]
The arrondissement of Aix-en-Provence was created in 1800. [4] At the March 2017 reorganization of the arrondissements of Bouches-du-Rhône, it lost two communes to the arrondissement of Istres and one commune to the arrondissement of Marseille, and it gained six communes from the arrondissement of Arles and one commune from the arrondissement of Marseille.
