State University of Jakarta (Indonesian: Universitas Negeri Jakarta, commonly abbreviated as UNJ) is a public university in Jakarta, Indonesia. Founded in 1964 as the Jakarta Institute of Teaching and Education ( IKIP Jakarta ), it was later converted into a state university by the Indonesian government in 1999.
The university was declared on 28 October 1966, following the merger of the older Pancasila University which was itself founded in 1963 and the Bung Karno University which was founded in 1964 [1] (not to be mistaken with another identically named university founded in 1999), partially due to the pressure from the Suharto government against symbolism of the former president.
Pattimura University was founded on the initiative of J. B. Sitanala and several community leaders. The West Irian Maluku Higher Education Foundation was formed on July 20, 1955 chaired by Cornelis Loppies who succeeded in establishing the Faculty of Law on October 3, 1956.
