Allan Turner of the Houston Chronicle said that the papers "are both journalistic throwbacks — papers whose content directly reflects their owners' views — and cutting-edge, hyper-local publications targeting the concerns of the city's roughly half-million African-Americans."
The Baytown Sun was founded in Goose Creek, Texas, as the weekly publication, Goose Creek Gasser, in 1919. By 1928, the paper was operating under the name Daily Tribune . Due to the economic pressures caused by the Great Depression , in 1931 the Daily Tribune merged with newspapers in the nearby communities of Pelly and Baytown.
In February 2020, the paper was sold by Beeville Publishing Co., Inc. to Coastal Bend Publishing, an affiliate of McElvy Media Group.
