Pet frogs can be fed a wide variety of live foods, from pinhead crickets to mice and rats, depending on the size of the frog. Particularly small pet frogs, like those of Dendrobates and Phyllobates species, will generally feed on small crickets, fruit flies, springtails, and other small arthropods. Medium-sized pet frogs can be fed larger ...
The spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer) [3] is a small chorus frog widespread throughout the eastern United States and Canada. [4] It prefers permanent ponds due to its advantage in avoiding predation; however, it is very adaptable with respect to the habitat it can live in.
[9] [10] They are mostly diurnal, feed on tiny invertebrates and breeding is by direct development, with eggs laid on land and hatching into young frogs (no tadpole stage). [11] [12] The majority of the Brachycephalus species have only been discovered in the 21st century. Most species have tiny ranges and are seriously threatened. [9]
Wood frogs eat a variety of small, forest-floor invertebrates, with a diet primarily consisting of insects. The tadpoles are omnivorous, feeding on plant detritus and algae along with other tadpoles of their own and other species. [14] The feeding pattern of the wood frog is similar to that of other ranids.
Like many other frogs Breviceps fuscus is an insectivore which feeds on small insects, spiders, insect larvae and worms. [9] The main source of protein for Breviceps fuscus is crickets. If they eat crickets bigger in size they can go through impaction. Impaction can cause blockage of the intestine which can cause death. [13]
The little grass frog has a few defensive mechanisms to avoid predation. Despite their small size, they can jump about 20 times their body length which can help them escape predators. [15] Their coloration also provides them with a great advantage. They have a cryptic coloration similar to the vegetation in the areas in which they live.
Researchers studying similar small-sized “flea toads” found this species to be particularly interesting due to its diminutive size as one of the smallest known vertebrate animals.
The diet of water-holding frogs is broad and ranges from worms and insects to tadpoles and other small frogs. [3] [12] Frogs may eat their own tadpoles but only when food availability is scarce. [15] On dry land they will also feed on ants and termites. [12]
