The Ouachita National Forest is the oldest National Forest in the southern United States. The forest encompasses 1,784,457 acres (7,221 km 2), including most of the scenic Ouachita Mountain Range. Six locations in the forest, comprising 65,000 acres (263 km 2), have been congressionally-designated as wilderness areas.
The Ouachita Mountains contain the Ouachita National Forest, Hot Springs National Park and Lake Ouachita, as well as numerous state parks and scenic byways mostly throughout Arkansas. Ouachita National Recreation Trail is a 223-mile (359 km) long, continuous hiking trail through the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma and Arkansas. It is the longest backpacking trail in the Ouachita National Forest, spanning 192 miles across its length. [1] Approximately 177 miles of the trail is in Arkansas and 46 miles of the trail is in Oklahoma.
Shady Lake is located in central western Arkansas, on the southern fringe of Ouachita National Forest, about 30 miles (48 km) west of Glenwood.The lake itself is roughly crescent-shaped and was created in 1935 with the assistance of enrollees from the CCC, particularly by members from Company 742 stationed at Camp F-4 (situated within the community of Shady).
