Sky Q is a subscription-based television and entertainment service operated by British satellite television provider Sky, as a part of its operations in Austria and Germany, Ireland, Italy and in the UK. The name also refers to the Sky Q set-top box. Sky Q launched in 2016 replacing the previous Sky+ and Sky X services. [1]
A demo of the Sky+ box was shown on the Sky Customer Channel (Channel 999). Originally a Sky+ subscription cost £10 per month - this fee was discontinued for subscribers from 1 July 2007. [ 1 ] By July 2002 the service attracted 25,000 subscribers, [ 2 ] and by 30 September 2009, there were 5.9 million customers with Sky+. [ 3 ]
The Sky Q range consists of three set-top boxes (Sky Q 1TB, Sky Q 2TB and Sky Q Mini), a broadband router (Sky Q Hub) and mobile applications. The Sky Q set-top boxes introduce a new user interface, Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, Power-line and Bluetooth connectivity and a new touch-sensitive remote control. [ 66 ]
Sky have created On Demand, which will combine Sky Broadband and Sky+ HD to offer a true on-demand service using the Ethernet socket of the Sky+ HD box and the Sky Broadband router. Sky Customers will be able to connect their Sky router to their Sky+ HD box via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi adapter, and stream content directly to their television.
