St. Martin Parish consists of two non-contiguous areas. 16 schools are in "Upper St. Martin Parish" and one school, Stephensville Elementary School, is in "Lower St. Martin Parish." [2] Students in Lower St. Martin Parish attend Morgan City High School in nearby St. Mary Parish upon finishing at Stephensville Elementary School.
The first school built by Bossier Parish School Board was Benton High School in 1890. By 1905 It had three teachers and one graduating class. The school taught grades 6–12 with no more than 25 students per grade, with some grades missing students.

In 2009, the Bossier Parish School Board voted to alter the school's academic format and changed the school's name to "Louisiana New Tech at Plain Dealing." [7] In 2017 the district announced that it will merge Martin Elementary into Plain Dealing High, and stop using the former elementary facility. [8]
