Effective from 26 June 2002, the college became a deemed university and was renamed Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology. From its beginnings, the institute offered bachelor's degree programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
With an aim to expand academic, placement and start-up activities, the institution is buildup an extension centre at Bhubaneswar. Its designed to cater to the needs of distance learning and short-term courses, conduct placements and training activities, promote industry-academia partnerships, and provide opportunities to promising startups.
The 17 Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) (Bhopal, Allahabad, Kozhikode, Durgapur, Hamirpur, Kurukshetra, Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Jaipur, Nagpur, Rourkela, Silchar, Srinagar, Surathkal, Surat, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal) were established in the major states of India as a cooperative venture between the central and respective state governments.
