Like most other provinces in Canada, education is compulsory from ages 6–16 (grades 1–10), although the vast majority of students remain in school until they graduate from high school at the age of 18.

The school was founded in Islington as a boys' school for 30 students in 1613, which makes the school one of the oldest in the United Kingdom.
