For the 2005 model year, Ford's 4.2 L Essex V6—mated to either a manual transmission or a four-speed automatic—became available on regular cab 4×2 models and automatic headlamps became available. This generation of F-150 is the last Ford vehicle with a gasoline pushrod V6.
At its introduction, the Excursion was the longest and heaviest SUV ever to enter mass production. The third Ford SUV was derived from the F-Series pickup trucks (after the Ford Bronco and the Ford Expedition), and the model line used a heavier-duty chassis and frame than the Expedition; both vehicles competed against the Chevrolet Suburban.
As with the Ford Explorer and Ford Explorer Sport, rear-wheel drive was standard, with ControlTrac four-wheel drive as an optional powertrain configuration. A 210 hp (157 kW) SOHC 4.0L V6 was the sole engine offering. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, with a five-speed automatic transmission available as an option.
