They were the first elections since 1990 not to be held under a bonus seats system, due to amendments to the electoral law made in 2016. Instead, a purely proportional system was used. [4]
Hence, the previous system was still applied in the 2019 election, which the opposition won, [1] whereas the new system was applied in the 2023 election for the first time. In 2020, parliament, under its new conservative majority , repealed party-list proportional representation and reverted the system to a sliding scale majority bonus system.
