An audio watermark is a unique electronic identifier embedded in an audio signal, typically used to identify ownership of copyright. It is similar to a watermark on a photograph. Digital watermarking is the process of embedding information into a signal (e.g. audio, video or pictures) in a way that is difficult to remove.
Often used by a watermark designer is the evaluation of single properties to show, for example, an improvement. Mostly, end-users are not interested in detailed information. They want to know if a given digital watermarking algorithm may be used for their application scenario, and if so, which parameter sets seems to be the best.

It is kept separate from the content, but within the file or stream. As an example, metadata is used in media purchased from iTunes for DRM-free as well as DRM-restricted content.
