Quảng Trị is a coastal province near the southernmost part of the North Central Coast region, the Central of Vietnam. It borders Quảng Bình to the north, Huế to the south, Savannakhet of Laos to the west and the South China Sea to the east, with 75 kilometres (47 mi) of coast.
A major feature of the town is the Quảng Trị Citadel, built in 1824, as a military bastion during the 4th year of the reign of Minh Mạng. It is an example of Vauban architecture and it later became the administrative head office of the Nguyễn dynasty in Quảng Trị Province (1809–1945).
Four of the northernmost provinces of the north central coast region, fell within the communist-ruled North Vietnam (DRVN, controlled territory above 17th parallel according to Geneva accords), were hostile to the United States and ARVN forces throughout the Vietnam War as it was a NLF (Viet Cong) stronghold and patron.
Before it became its own district, the island was in the commune of Vĩnh Quang, in Vĩnh Linh district of Quảng Trị Province. The island became a district through Decree 174/2004 NĐ-CP of October 1, 2004. Province officials held a ceremony to create the district on April 18, 2005. As of 2023 the district had a population of 400. [11]

Hướng Hóa (listen ⓘ) is a rural district of Quảng Trị province in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam. As of 2003 the district had a population of 69,003. [1] The district covers an area of 1,145 km 2. The district capital lies at Khe Sanh. [1] The population is made up of ethnic Vietnamese as well as Bru people and Ta Oi people.
