Della Mae is an American bluegrass band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, in 2009. [1] Their name, "Della Mae" comes from the song, "Big Spike Hammer." [2]Della Mae was formed by Kimber Ludiker, Amanda Kowalski, Grace Van’t Hof, and Avril Smith, and released their first EP, "Della Mae: Acoustic EP" in 2010.
Della Mae has worked with the US Department of State as cultural diplomats and, as such, in 2012 travelled to Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Avi Salloway and Celia Woodsmith started in 2009 performing in the Northeast with their new band Hey Mama, a quartet featuring Paul Chase on bass and Jared Seabrook on drums, for two years before disbanding and moving on to new projects. Celia is currently a vocalist for the popular bluegrass quintet Della Mae.
