It was established in 2011 by animal welfare charity, Cats Protection, who found that black (and black-and-white cats) took around a week longer to home than cats of other colours. They attributed this to black cats' perceived connection with bad luck and the supernatural, and the fact that the cats do not photograph well on social media. [4]

By the end of the 1860s decade, he had also become a prominent landscape painter. [2] From 1870 to 1873 he studied in Antwerp , Belgium, and took further studies in Paris from 1880 to 1882. Afterwards he specialised in painting pet animals such as dogs and cats.
The paintings are thought to be a study for his later work, Three Women (Le Grand Déjeuner, 1921–1922). The larger work (130.8 × 90.5 cm) was originally part of the Gottlieb Reber collection in Switzerland until 1958; it was eventually sold to Samuel and Florene Marx and then gifted to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1994.
