The block entered production in mid 1965 as the Mark IV 396 cu in (6.5 L) "Turbo-Jet," phasing out the first-generation W-series Big-Block. In its first year the 396 was available as the L78 option in Corvettes and full-sized ( Impala , Bel Air , Biscayne ) models, and as the L37 in the intermediate ( Chevelle ) model.
This was so named because it began with Chevrolet's V8 engines. The 455 big block Olds V8 was replaced in 1977 with the 402.6 cu in (6.6 L; 6,598 cc) small block, which used a 4.351 in (110.5 mm) bore, the largest ever used in a small-block V8, with the Olds small-block standard deck and 3.385 in (86.0 mm) stroke.
Optional was a four-barrel carbureted version of the 350 V8 rated at 275 gross (200 net with dual exhaust and 175 net with single exhaust) horsepower. The 402 cid big-block engine continued to be optional as the SS 396 but was only available in one horsepower rating, 300 gross (260 net) horsepower, and was not available with cowl induction.
