The Old Hickory Council, BSA held their first Scouting function, a spring camporee, at Raven Knob Park near Mount Airy, North Carolina in 1954. From this event, Council officials determined that the park site would be suitable for a summer camp. This new camp would replace Camp Lasater, which was located close to Winston-Salem.
Camping was an emphasis for the councils from their formation. Each council purchased or leased land for establishing Boy Scout camps. During the summer each camp was open for several weeks with a trained staff of older boys and adults to teach the Scouts various Scouting skills. In the mid-1930s most councils began holding annual "camporees."

In 2019, Governor's School West moved from Salem College to High Point University in High Point. GSW was again moved, in 2022 to Winston Salem State University and in 2024 to Greensboro College. While faculty and subject matter have changed over time, Governor's School remained basically unaltered from 1978 until 2009.
It is home to Camp Tadma, a Cub Scout summer resident camp and Camp Wakenah, a Cub Scout day camp previously located on Gardner Lake in Salem. The reservation was known almost exclusively as Camp Tadma until 2004. Camp Tadma was closed in 2013, much to the sorrow of the staff and dedicated Scout troops who had grown to love the camp.
