I think that and floating ribs are to blame, personally. I’m gonna agree that it could be from the ribs where they attach to the sternum in the front causing this pain. Gentle stretching and moderate exercises are available that can help mitigate some pain. Plus the use of tape fir wrapping / supporting areas.
It’s on the higher side of the sternum where the bone sticks out a bit. Feel up it and you’ll feel the bump. It also hurts if I press that part. Sounds like costochondritis / tietze syndrome. Cover this in Chapter 21 of Overcoming Gravity on common bodyweight injuries if you have it.
Yes, it cracks, and originally it didn't cause any pain. Now when I crack it I get some relief, followed by a horrible aching in my chest. It can be really bad actually, made me wonder if I hadn't actually damaged my ribs/sternum seriously.

Stop for a while until it gets better. Avoid lifts that aggravate the feeling then slowly add dips or whatever back into your training as your body will allow. If you're experiencing sternum pain while doing dips, don't do them. The ability to do dips safely is highly dependent on an individual bone structure.

It doesn't hurt though. If your lifting heavy (1.5x your body weight and up) and do both flat and incline presses consecutively and train it more than 2x a week it could just be a strain or inflammation. Also bouncing could cause it, but for a pause on the bottom that's a negative informative statement.
I've had my sternum cracked open and then wired shut (surgery), so my experience may not be that relevant. But if i was you I'd stop everything that causes pain, wait a fortnight, then slowly get back to dips using assistance; legs on box, resistance band, graviton machine, and slowly decrease the amount of assistance until you can do body ...
I had the sternum pain (around the outer edges in a couple spots) and after a couple days went to the ER to get check out in case of a heart attack. Everything came back clear and I started getting treated for acid reflux. I don't know if the acid reflux meds helped with the sternum pain or not but after a few months it finally went away.
