José Guillermo Santiago Guzmán (September 4, 1928 – October 9, 2018), [1] better known by the nickname "Pantalones", was a Puerto Rican professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball between 1954 and 1956 for the Cleveland Indians (1954–1955) and Kansas City Athletics ().
Santiago was born on August 15, 1940, in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, one of three children born to Alejandro Santiago and Merida Alfonso. Alejandro played amateur baseball. Santiago's nickname was "Palillo" (toothpick). He played the outfield in high school, but became a pitcher in college at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico. [1] [2]
After that, Santiago was a member of the Puerto Rico national team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and joined the Olmecas de Tabasco for the rest of the summer. In addition to playing for the New Orleans Zephyrs in the Mets farm system In 2008, Santiago pitched for the Gigantes de Carolina Puerto Rico representing team in the Caribbean Series.
