On March 8, 1901, Port Wing became a town, putting it in charge of schools. Because of the growing enrollment, the Town of Port Wing built a larger three-story white school in 1903 costing $25,000. The building was divided into the Port Wing Graded School on the first floor, and the Union Free High School on the second floor.
