The schedule includes two breaks to accommodate the 2024 Paris Olympics in July. The competition pauses for seven weeks after the Salt Lake City World Cup in May for the 2024 Olympic Qualifier Series events in Shanghai from 16 to 19 May and Budapest from 20 to 23 June, when the final Olympic places in sport climbing are awarded.
The number of events varies from year to year, and the winners for each discipline are decided by the points accumulated in the year. The first World Cup was held in 1989 and included only lead competition climbing events. Speed climbing was introduced in 1998, and bouldering in 1999.
USA Climbing is the national governing body of the sport of competition climbing in the United States. [1] As a 501(c)3 non-profit, they promote Sport Climbing which comprises three competition disciplines: bouldering, lead climbing, and speed climbing, in elite, youth and collegiate formats.
The present format has four disciplines: lead, speed, bouldering, and combined. The first championships had two events: lead and speed. Bouldering was added in 2001. In 2012, 2014 and 2016, a combined ranking (sometimes also called overall ranking) was computed for climbers participating in all of the three events.
