For warfare, lances are made of metal, but jousting lances are made of wood and tipped with metal, which allows them to break on impact with the opponent's shield. The lance is typically constructed from 1.25-or-1.5-inch-thick (3.2 or 3.8 cm) wood, depending on the progression of a joust.
