The Lawrence Visitors Center, formerly the Union Pacific Depot. Grant Township, north of the Kansas River, was annexed to Douglas County in 1870 from southern Sarcoxie Township in Jefferson County. The largest city in the township was Jefferson, founded in 1866 just over the river from Lawrence.
Riverfront Park is a park maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers that follows the Kansas River levee from Leavenworth County to Jefferson County; The Union Pacific Railroad Depot was designed by Henry Van Brunt and built in 1889. It was used until 1984, was saved from demolition and is now the Lawrence Visitors Information Center.
Lawrence's Downtown Historic District comprises the commercial core of Lawrence, Kansas. The district comprises areas along Massachusetts Street between 6th Street and South Park Street. Nearly all of the contributing structures are masonry commercial buildings, typically with display windows at street level and smaller windows at upper levels.
