Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a large ski resort in the western United States, located in eastern California along the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Inyo National Forest. Mammoth has more than 3,500 acres (1,420 ha) of skiable terrain, [ 2 ] serviced by 28 lifts.
In 1983, a consortium of investors was loaned $13.5 million by the Sunrise Savings and Loan to buy the hotel, in part based on an appraisal that the hotel was worth $5 million more than it actually was. The borrowers defaulted, Sunrise sank into receivership over a series of bad loans in 1985, and efforts began to sell the property.
In 2014, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (owned by Starwood Capital Group at that time under the entity Mammoth Resorts) purchased Bear Mountain and Snow Summit for $38 million.
