The museum was established by George and Helen Gardiner, and was opened to the public on 6 March 1984. In 1987, management of the institution was assumed by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The ROM continued to manage the Gardiner Museum until 1996, when an additional endowment to the museum allowed it to reincorporate as an independent institution.
Helen Gardiner was born in 1938 in the Northern mining town of Kirkland Lake to a working family. She later moved to Toronto where her father was employed by General Electric . [ 2 ] In 1974, she began attending York University as a mature student, and in 1979, she travelled to London , England to study at Christie's Education .

Bill Reddick (born 1958) is a Canadian artist turned baker. Reddick began working in pottery during the 1970s before switching over to porcelain in 1996. During his artistic career, Reddick made Canada's Official State Dinnerware called the Maple Leaf Service in 2005.
William Gardiner was born in Dundee, at Overgate, on 13 July 1808. [4] According to Lawley, his mother sold pottery, while his father, William senior, was a weaver, gardener, botanist and poet. [4] William junior's grandfather, James Gardiner, was also a weaver. [4] He received little education as a child, but learned how to read and write. [5]
