The Army constructed Fort Gratiot in 1814 as an outpost to guard the juncture of the Saint Clair River and Lake Huron. The fort took the name of the engineer supervising its construction, Charles Gratiot. Soldiers occupied Fort Gratiot until 1822 and then abandoned the fort. Fort Gratiot Township (/ ˈ ɡ r æ ʃ ɪ t / GRASH-it) [3] is a charter township of St. Clair County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,242 at the 2020 Census . [ 4 ] It is named for Fort Gratiot , an American fort located there off and on between 1814 and 1879.
The structure was donated to the city of Dearborn in 1950. [3] Currently located at 915 Brady Street, it was renamed the McFadden-Ross House after it was donated to the City to be used as a museum. [6] The last remaining structure of the original eleven, the commandant's quarters, served as a social and cultural center in Dearborn until 1875.
