Of all of Liszt's compositions, his songs – there are half a hundred of them – are the least known and sung ones. The most circulated and popular one, in any case, is "Es muß ein Wunderbares sein", one of the few songs by Liszt, of which the tender homogenous mood is nowhere forcefully broken, and which can be purely enjoyed.
In 1834, Franz Liszt wrote his Grosses Konzertstück über Mendelssohns Lieder ohne Worte (Grand Concert Piece on Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words) for 2 pianos. This was based on songs 1–3 of Book I, Op. 19b. [13] Liszt and a student, Mlle. Vial, started to play it in Paris on 9 April 1835 [14] but Liszt became ill during the performance.
Grand galop chromatique in E-flat major, S.219 is a bravura piece by Franz Liszt, composed in 1838. This galop was one of Liszt's favorite encores which he considered a "rouser". [ 1 ] The galop chromatique was published as a piano solo and also in a version for piano duet ( S.616 ).
The Hungarian Rhapsodies, S.244, R.106 (French: Rhapsodies hongroises, German: Ungarische Rhapsodien, Hungarian: Magyar rapszódiák), are a set of 19 piano pieces based on Hungarian folk themes, composed by Franz Liszt during 1846–1853, and later in 1882 and 1885. Liszt also arranged versions for orchestra, piano duet and piano trio.
The pieces are all based on some of the Caprices (Nos. 6/5, 17, 1, 9, and 24) and concertos (No. 2/1) by Niccolò Paganini for violin, and are among the most technically demanding pieces in pianistics (especially the original versions, before Liszt revised them, thinning the textures and removing some of the more outrageous technical difficulties).
