XSL-FO (XSL Formatting Objects) is a markup language for XML document formatting that is most often used to generate PDF files. XSL-FO is part of XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language), a set of W3C technologies designed for the transformation and formatting of XML data.
The XPath syntax is designed to mimic URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) and Unix-style file path syntax. More complex expressions can be constructed by specifying an axis other than the default 'child' axis, a node test other than a simple name, or predicates, which can be written in square brackets after any step. For example, the expression
XPath, the XML Path Language, is a query language for selecting nodes from an XML document. XPath defines a syntax named XPath expressions that can query an XML document for one or more internal components (elements, attributes, etc.). XPath is widely used in other core-XML specifications and in programming libraries for accessing XML-encoded ...
XSL began as an attempt to bring the functionality of DSSSL, particularly in the area of print and high-end typesetting, to XML.. In response to a submission from Arbortext, Inso, and Microsoft, [2] a W3C working group on XSL started operating in December 1997, with Sharon Adler and Steve Zilles as co-chairs, with James Clark acting as editor (and unofficially as chief designer), and Chris ...
XPointer is a system for addressing components of XML-based Internet media. It is divided among four specifications: a "framework" that forms the basis for identifying XML fragments, a positional element addressing scheme, a scheme for namespaces, and a scheme for XPath-based addressing.
The XQuery and XPath Data Model (XDM) is the data model shared by the XPath 2.0, XSLT 2.0, XQuery, and XForms programming languages. It is defined in a W3C recommendation . [ 1 ] Originally, it was based on the XPath 1.0 data model which in turn is based on the XML Information Set .
The "/" operator is generalized in XPath 2.0 to allow any kind of expression to be used as an operand: in XPath 1.0, the right-hand side was always an axis step. For example, a function call can be used on the right-hand side. The typing rules for the operator require that the result of the first operand is a sequence of nodes.
Simple XML is a variation of XML containing only elements. All attributes are converted into elements. All attributes are converted into elements. Not having attributes or other xml elements such as the XML declaration / DTDs allows the use of simple and fast parsers.
