Central Park’s Wollman Rink opened for the winter season under new management on Sunday.
A skating rink in the southeastern corner of Central Park was first proposed in 1945. [5] In 1949, philanthropist Kate Wollman (1869–1955) [6] donated $600,000 for the rink's construction to commemorate her family. [1] She is the great-aunt of Henry and Richard Bloch, co-founders of H&R Block. [7]
In 1956, a former reservoir was converted to a skating rink to accommodate requests for year-round ice-skating facilities. The open-air rink would facilitate ice hockey and figure-skating in the winter, and dancing and roller-skating events in the summer. In October 1957, it opened to the public.
The rink's 2023 season runs from April 14 through October. Flipper's is open Sunday–Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m and Thursday–Saturday from noon to midnight. A one-hour skate session costs $22 for adults and $15 for children ages 4–12 who bring their own skates. The skate rental fee is $10. [25]
The ice-skating plaza in midtown is being transformed to a roller-skating rink that will open in April. It’ll be the first roller skate rink at Rockefeller Center since 1940.
Roller skating is the act of travelling on surfaces with roller skates. It is a recreational activity, a sport, and a form of transportation. Roller rinks and skate parks are built for roller skating, though it also takes place on streets, sidewalks, and bike paths. Roller skating originated in the performing arts in the 18th century.
