Francis Joseph Sheed (20 March 1897 – 20 November 1981) [1] was an Australian-born lawyer, Catholic writer, publisher, speaker, and lay theologian. He and his wife Maisie Ward were the names behind the imprint Sheed & Ward and as forceful public lecturers in the Catholic Evidence Guild .

Sheed and Ward is a publishing house founded in London in 1926 by Catholic activists Frank Sheed and Maisie Ward.The head office was moved to New York in 1933. The United States assets of Sheed and Ward have been owned by Rowman & Littlefield since 2002, and those in the United Kingdom are owned by Bloomsbury Publishing.
As an encyclopaedia, the authors set out to create a scholarly work, but accessible to the non-expert, designed to be. a Manual of Sacred Literature for the use of Ministers, Students, General Readers, and Sunday School Libraries, so complete in itself that no other work will be necessary for ordinary purposes of reference in these branches of knowledge.
The year after her death, three of her novels (One Poor Scruple, Out of Due Time and The Job Secretary) were reprinted by Sheed and Ward, prefaced by an "appreciation" by Noyes. [ 12 ] [ 14 ] Later in the 20th century, her novels fell into obscurity, [ 1 ] and in 1999 were noted as having received limited coverage by literary critics. [ 8 ]
